YEAR OF GREEN Pilot Project
The U.S. Green Schools Foundation has developed a place-based education program to introduce K-8 students to broad environmental topics relating to sustainability, with a focus on global warming, environmental and student health, and environmental stewardship. The program addresses the need to make it easy for educators to bring high quality environmental education into the science curriculum. We hope to make students aware of their local environments, by assisting educators to access the many resources available to them in local organizations, agencies and settings.
The program provides lesson plans aligned to a calendar of environmental events to provide an overall structure for teaching and a reason for celebration of our Earth. Relevant, local outreach resources are suggested to provide expertise and enriched understanding of each topic.

A Wikispace, provided free to educators, is designed by the Foundation as part of the package. The Wikispace is a creative online tool for students to explore environmental lesson topics and share data, photos, and results of their efforts. This tool is organized in the same framework as the overall program, by topic and aligned with the environmental calendar.
Our environmental program will be developed for five broad regions in Arizona: the Greater Phoenix Area, Central Arizona, Northern Arizona, Southern Arizona, and the Colorado River Area.

Curriculum Development Projects
The Foundation is seeking funding to implement two curriculum projects.
The first is an interactive, web-based application designed to enable students to explore site planning and building design considerations, developed by an Environmental Planner, Education Specialist, and application programmer in collaboration with architects working on a green school building project. The application will engage students in the project within a familiar setting. This will not only teach green principles, but will also engender student pride and instill a sense of environmental stewardship.
The second project is a database of currently existing curriculum material. The database would enable educators to search the enormous volumes of curricular materials available by keyword, or through a more restrictive search by labels such as environmental topic, academic subject, and grade level.
The database would be created by an education specialist, a researcher, and a database developer, and would be available on the Foundation’s website at www.usgreenschools.org.
